Campaigners award funds to local charities
The Daedalus Action Group was formed in Feb 2003 and fought a successful year-long campaign to prevent the Daedalus site being used as an open Asylum Seekers Processing Centre. On 3 February 2004 the Home Office announced the decision not to proceed with the proposed Processing Centre.
Following the Home Office decision, the Daedalus Action Group continued to monitor the Daedalus site for a further 4 years. At the end of that period the Group announced, on 9 March 2008, at its Annual General Meeting that the Group would disband, & in accordance with its Constitution, the remaining funds would be distributed to registered charities. The AGM was adjourned until 5 pm Sun 28 September 2008 where the statement of accounts was duly presented and the Daedalus Action Group was formally disbanded.
During the first year of our campaign we held various fund raising events, which were very well supported by the local community, which helped us raise considerable funds and along with numerous donations enabled us to run a highly successful campaign.
In distributing the funds, the team had to make some extremely difficult decisions to ensure there was genuine benefit to a wide cross section of the community. All applicants have been informed of the outcome by letter. Over £17,000 was awarded to the following recipients:
Bright Sparks Preschool (Titchfield)
